Crantock

Crantock Church Divided from the busy tourist town of Newquay by the river Gannel, is the picturesque village of Crantock. Steeped in history it attracts young and old alike to its charm, beautiful sandy beach, art and craft shops, tea garden, and public houses.

Once known in ages past as 'Langurroc' (the dwelling of monks) the small community centred around its church, where religious activity flourished before the Norman conquest. It is reputed that the parish name of Crantock was derived from one of the sixth century Celtic saints named Carantoc, who arrived by coracle into the Gannel estuary with his pet dove and decided to build an oratory here. In time it became a renowned college of priests and centre of religious learning, until it suffered the hand of Henry VIII. The Norman building, now St Crantock parish church, survived but became badly neglected. At the turn of the 20th century was fully restored, and is well worth a visit to see the magnificent wood carvings inside.

In the centre of the village is 'the round garden', one of the few remains of Crantock's Celtic past. Now owned by the National Trust, it is believed to be the site of one of the seven Celtic chapels which surrounded the original church. It is now an orchard where one can sit and enjoy the peace and tranquillity offered by the village.

The Old Albion, an ancient thatched inn, like so many in Cornwall, is reputed to be a centre for smuggling, and is located quite close to the church.

Large parts of the parish are now in the ownership of the National Trust, including the West Pentire headland. Just a short distance from Tregenna House there are numerous scenic walks in breathtaking surroundings. On this headland can be found the Bowgie Inn. Well worth a visit, with absolutely stunning views Crantock beach, Goose Rock and the open sea beyond. Crantock's long history has made it a place of immense delight and charm, and has much to offer today's visitor.
